About us

Welcome to our corner of Northumberland, where history, heritage and hospitality come together.

We’re a proud family-run farm offering self-catering holiday cottages nestled in North Northumberland’s stunning countryside. The Smales family has farmed Thornton for three generations, now focusing on organic farming. What makes our cottages truly special is their story and peaceful location. Once part of our working farm, the cottages have been lovingly restored to offer comfort and character in equal measure.

From the original stone walls and vaulted ceilings to the open views across rolling fields, each cottage carries a sense of place and connection to the land around. Whether you’re here to explore ancient castles, unwind on glorious beaches, or simply soak up the peace and quiet, we’re here to make your stay memorable.

We believe in the simple things: space to breathe, time to reconnect, and a warm welcome when you arrive. Northumberland is our home, and we can’t wait to share it with you.

Your main point of contact during your stay will be Laura Smales, who looks after the holiday cottages and is happy to assist if needed. While we respect your privacy, rest assured that someone is always nearby should you require any help.

Our farm is quiet and ideal for a tranquil rural retreat, a peaceful commercial farm spanning 279 hectares in North Northumberland.  Our only livestock consists of pet sheep, miniature donkeys, hens, ducks, guinea fowl, and a pony—all adding to the charm of life at Thornton.
